A historic hotel in an old palazzo on the Grand Canal

On 30 December 2025, my mission was to book a hotel in Venice so that by 2 January 2026 my client could be admiring historic palazzi on the Grand Canal. We were looking for a place with antique-style furnishings, classic Venetian décor, and a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the Grand Canal — for that “film-star” morning coffee and breakfast experience.

We chose the elegant Hotel San Cassiano Ca’Favretto Venice 4* (Booking rating: 8.9). The tour operator price was lower, and it felt more reliable. We received the voucher within five minutes of payment. We booked a Single room and were given a lovely room.

“I really liked the hotel! The staff were very friendly. There’s a luggage storage room where you can leave your suitcase. The hotel isn’t new, but everything is clean. Wi-Fi, a kettle, tea/coffee/sugar, slippers and toiletries are all complimentary. There’s also a mini fridge, hairdryer and air conditioning. It was warm. The room is small, but the bed is wide and comfortable. My view wasn’t of the Grand Canal — those rooms are more expensive — but of a narrow inner canal where only a single small boat can pass. It was enough to feel the Venetian atmosphere. The location is genuinely great: away from the main tourist crowds, yet close to the vaporetto stop for Murano and Burano…”

The hotel is in the Santa Croce area, just a short walk from Rialto, with its famous market and bridge; Erbaria, known for its bacari (traditional Venetian bars) and cicchetti (local small bites); and Mercerie, the shopping street connecting Rialto to St Mark’s.

Palazzo Ca’Favretto is a historic residence once home to Giacomo Favretto, a 19th-century painter whose works are displayed in museums worldwide. Hotel San Cassiano offers an exclusive view of the Grand Canal and Ca’ d’Oro. The breakfast room on the second floor also has a balcony overlooking the canal.

The hotel has six Deluxe rooms with Grand Canal views — ideal for a romantic break or a honeymoon. The rooms are comfortable and refreshed, with antique-style prints, luxurious drapes, and Murano glass chandeliers. From Venezia Santa Lucia railway station, you can take a water taxi directly to the hotel, or Vaporetto Line 1 (ACTV) to San Stae. The hotel is about a five-minute walk from the pier.
